The primary goal of this course is to help you, the student, develop a stance, a philosophy or teaching personality in relation to reading and language arts instruction. This course will help you make decisions about how effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening are accomplished. Ultimately, we believe the goal of the School of Education–excellence in teaching–cannot be achieved by mindless practice. Students bring a variety of experiences to their language development, and teachers must actively choose how to best facilitate that development. Variations across culture and socioeconomic status are often striking, and the strategies you will learn in this class will assist you in knowing how to deal with these differences. Therefore, you will find this course will nudge you towards careful, decisive pedagogy.
