For students without a working knowledge in German; an introduction to the grammar and syntax of German for the purpose of translating written German into English.

This course aims to provide the student with adequate comprehension of German academic literature (with an emphasis on theological German), in order to meet the Graduate language proficiency requirements.

The course focuses on the study of German grammar, syntax, and vocabulary with the goal of a correct understanding and interpretation of German academic texts, especially theological passages. This will be achieved through an in-depth study of the lexical, grammatical, and syntactic properties of the German language, and through intensive translation work on excerpts from academic theological literature chosen from various fields of study. The material for this course will be presented in form of explanations and guided exercises from the text book, and freely chosen texts. The course also includes an introduction to translation and dictionary techniques as well as German pronunciation.
