This course will help participants develop and apply the skills necessary in the role of an effective consultant with teachers, families, and other professionals in educational settings. Emphasis will be given to making data-based decision-making and problem-solving and applying research-based intervention strategies within the school system. Additionally, the role of the consultation process in prevention of problems in the schools, diversity issues, power inequities, and social justice will be addressed in the course. Reflection and self-evaluation will be an important aspect of developing consultation skills and incorporated throughout the course. This course will function as a didactic/practicum, with presentations and analysis of fieldwork experiences during course sessions. A second set of goals is to extend the students' knowledge of research and practice in two additional areas: classroom interventions and systems consultation.
